The Hertfordshire Way is a 166-mile circular route along
public rights-of-way within the County of
Hertfordshire, with a new extension of 24 miles. Our new
guidebook divides the route into 16
sections, or 'legs', each making up a comfortable day's
walk of about 12 miles (shortest is 11, longest 15).
Wherever possible we have chosen places with some public
transport access for the end points of each leg.
However, anyone willing to spend a bit of time studying
the maps and timetables, or able to use two cars, can
choose different starting and finishing points. The
route has been chosen to pass through a variety of
Hertfordshire scenery, mostly in open countryside but
also passing through some of our more interesting and
attractive villages. Hertford and St Albans, as the
County Town and main historic centre respectively, are
the only large towns on the route.
Although originally inspired by the RA, the Friends
of The Hertfordshire Way is an autonomous group. It is
now financed mainly by fund-raising activities of its
membership, from its very modest subscriptions, from
donations and from the sale of the guidebook.
The Friends of The Hertfordshire Way has a walks
programme. We meet once a month on Mondays (to avoid
clashes with weekend and mid-week walks programmes of
other groups such as the regional RA sections).
Non-members are very welcome to join these walks at no
cost.
